A family-run haulage company boss has been given a lifetime achievement for his services to the industry.

Peter Hughes, who owns Earl Transport was presented with the award at the Transport News Rewards after working in trucking for over 45 years.

The Oswaldtwistle-based company continue to offer services across the United Kingdom and continues to maintain its business relationship with Blackburn-based Pet’s Choice.

Alongside his daughter Rhian Hughes, who collected Women of the Year at the same industry awards last year.

Rhian said: “It is amazing, it is just so nice, and we are a medium-sized haulage industry, and it is nice to be recognised.

“My dad had no idea that it was coming. He is very well-known in the industry and the amount of people that have commented on how much he has done and how well-liked he is.

“It is a great achievement for the business, and it is nice to be known and to receive such accolades.”

Hosted by ITV News Presenter Sameena Ali-Khan and author Ian Moore the awards commended the excellent work in the haulage industry, which has faced difficulties because of Brexit and a worker shortage.

Both Rhian and Peter were also awarded the Freedom of the City of London which is given to individuals who are completely committed to their industry.

It is believed to be one of the oldest titles in the UK and in the 13th century, it was an essential requirement for all who wished to carry out business and prosper trade.

They are now given to recognise people’s contributions to public life and to celebrate significant achievements with Ian Wright, Bill Gates and Morgan Freeman all having one.

Whilst there are no practical implications it is considered to maintain the Freeman as a living tradition and is extended to people all over the world.
