Tributes have been pouring in following the death of former One Direction star Liam Payne at the age of 31.
Payne is reported to have died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local officials said, according to the Associated Press.
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, said on Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that Payne fell into a courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood of Argentina’s capital, AP said.
Payne was part of the original line-up of the world-famous boy band, formed in 2010, alongside Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles.Payne is said to have been in Buenos Aires to attend the concert of his former bandmate Horan, having been seen dancing at his show two weeks ago at the Movistar Arena alongside his girlfriend Kate Cassidy.
After becoming one of the biggest pop groups in the world with five albums and four world tours, they went on indefinite hiatus in 2016.

Payne, who was born in Wolverhampton, released his debut solo album LP1 in December 2019 which included the singles Polaroid and Familiar.
He and Girls Aloud singer Cheryl share a son Bear, born in 2017, having been in a high-profile relationship between 2016 and 2018.
In August last year, Payne postponed his scheduled tour of South America after suffering from a “serious kidney infection”.
He said the infection was something “I wouldn’t wish on anyone” and he had been instructed by doctors to “rest and recover”.
In August, Payne was announced as a judge on a new Netflix show alongside former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland and The Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger.
The stars were to judge attempts to create a band, looking at the contestants’ chemistry as they formed groupings in the musical competition series.
Tributes pour in
A statement on the official X account of the Brit Awards said: “We’re incredibly sad to learn of the tragic passing of Liam Payne. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this time”.
Media personality and fellow former X Factor contestant Rylan Clark said Liam Payne’s death was “tragic”.
In a post on X, the broadcaster described news of the singer’s death as “extremely sad.”

Jack Johnson, one half of American rap duo Jack & Jack, paid tribute to singer Liam Payne following his death and called out social media trolls for their treatment of the former One Direction star.
“If this Liam Payne news is true that s**t is honestly so gut-wrenching… was such a nice guy the few times me and G ran into him, f*** the Internet for being so ruthless over the past few months,” he wrote on X.
DJ and music producer Zedd called the news of Liam Payne’s death “absolutely heartbreaking”.
In a post on X, he said he “can’t believe this is real”.
Presenter Dermot O’Leary has remembered Liam Payne as a 14 year-old-boy auditioning for The X Factor following the singer’s death.
Alongside a photo of O’Leary and Payne standing on stage together, he wrote on Instagram: “The worst news. I remember him as a 14 year old turning up to audition on The X Factor, and blowing us away singing Sinatra. He just loved to sing.
“He was always a joy, had time for everyone, polite, grateful, and was always humble.
“Sending love and prayers to his family. Dx”
Spotify has posted a tribute to Liam Payne on social media following reports of his death in Buenos Aires.
In a message shared on X, the music streaming platform said: “We are deeply saddened by the news of Liam Payne’s passing. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the many fans who loved and supported him.”
The message was accompanied with an image of the former One Direction member.
A statement on MTV’s official social media accounts said: “We’re deeply saddened to learn of Liam Payne’s tragic passing today. During this difficult time, our hearts remain with his family, loved ones, and fans.”
Former One Direction hairstylist Lou Teasdale posted a message on X following the death of Liam Payne.
She wrote: “Sending you all so much love to you all” alongside an emoji of a broken heart.
A message posted on Amazon Music’s X account said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Liam Payne. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who love his music.”
The post included a black and white image of the former One Direction star.
The Foreign Office has confirmed it is contact with local authorities in Argentina “regarding reports of the death of a British man”.
A spokesperson for the FCDO declined to comment any further, including on the identity of the man involved.
Singer Charlie Puth paid tribute to Liam Payne on his Instagram account, revealing he was in “shock”.
“Liam was always so kind to me,” he wrote, alongside a collection of photos of the pair working together.
“He was one of the first major artists I got to work with. I cannot believe he is gone… I am so upset right now, may he rest in peace.”
