A road that residents say has been blighted by potholes for more than a decade is finally getting resurfaced.

Barnfield Street in Accrington, near Accrington and Rossendale College, has potholes so severe that people have feared their cars have been damaged by them.

Lancashire County Council will commence the roadworks and close the road on Wednesday, October 23, until Thursday, October 31.

Allan Low, who has lived on the street for 43 years, said: “Damn right I’m pleased about the works, but the only problem now is we’ll have nothing to complain about!

“It used to be a real pain, but I think they will do a proper job and strip the entire tarmac off.”

Mr Low explained he was talking to a surveyor who reported the cost of recycling one tonne of tarmac to be £300, so LCC is tasked with removing as little as possible, he claimed.

He added: “We stopped referring to them as potholes and instead we called them council-sponsored traffic calming.

“I won’t celebrate quite yet, but I will when it’s done.”

Mr Low did add he was concerned that when the road is resurfaced it will be more appealing for drivers to break the 20mph speed limit.

Brian Less, who has lived on the street for 37 years, said: “I’m amazed that it’s finally getting done, to be honest with you.

“You always have to treat the road with respect when driving on it as you know full well it could damage your car.”

Barnfield Councillor Clare McKenna said: "I think it's fantastic news for the residents.

"I live round the corner so walk up and down it quite regularly and you can see it's in a bad state.

"People were avoiding using that route to get to school and college so they'll be delighted now."

Lancashire County Council has been contacted for comment.
