Patients registered at an Accrington GP practice are being asked to have their say on plans to relocate the surgery.

The PWE Accrington Victoria GP practice needs to move out of its current space at Accrington Victoria Community Hospital due to the site no longer being fit for purpose.

Acorn Primary Health Care Centre in Blackburn Road is a potential new site for the practice but no final decision has been made.

To allow those registered with the new practice to have a say, an online survey has been created and a drop-in session has been arranged for October 22.

It comes as part of a wider programme to relocate services from within the ageing building, which is set to close with problems such as asbestos and a collapsed roof “beyond repair” at the hospital.

Dr Kathryn Atkinson, clinical director for PWE, said: “The facilities at Accrington Victoria are no longer fit for purpose and we need a more suitable base from which to provide a GP service fit for the 21st century.

“We know there are premises close to us which can offer this, allowing our patients to receive healthcare in a more appropriate setting with better access and with modern-day facilities.

“We also know that any proposals for change such as this can cause concern and lead to questions so we would encourage our patients to complete the online survey or pop in and see us at our drop-in on October 22.”

To have your say on the proposals, visit the Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB website. Paper copies of the survey are also available at the practice reception desk.

The drop-in session will be held between 10am and 11.30am on October 22, with no appointment required.

East Lancashire Hospitals Trust (ELHT) announced last Thursday (October 10) that the hospital would be closing.

Hyndburn MP Sarah Smith said she is going to take the fight to the Chancellor’s office and blamed “catastrophic inheritance” from previous Conservative governments.
