This photo from 1979 shows a little-known historic landmark known as ‘The Spewing Duck’.
Situated in Goodshaw Fold in Rossendale, it was a well of natural spring water which had originally been built in 1855.
The large triangular stone above the well celebrated the fact it had been paid for by subscription by local residents and the executors of the late John Hargreaves who had left a bequest in his will.
We think this photo was taken to mark the renovation of the well and the wall surrounding it.
The well got its name from the original ‘tap’ which had a curved pipe shaped like a duck’s neck.
