Blackburn is one of the ‘worst’ of the UK’s ‘busy’ railway stations to travel from on a Sunday with nearly half of its trains getting cancelled.

A stark 45 per cent of the station’s Sunday services were cancelled over the last six months, according to Ontimetrains as of October 14.

In the same period, the ranking website reveals only a third (33 per cent) arrived on time.

This comes as operator, Northern, issued a ‘do not travel’ warning for the sixth Sunday in a row last week (October 13).

Blackburn is the 375th busiest railway station in the country with almost 3,500 passengers passing through it daily.

Its Sunday performance in the last six months ranks it as the fourth ‘most unreliable’ station, out of the UK’s 500 busiest, to travel from on the backend of a weekend.

On the most recent Sunday, October 13, the majority (52 per cent) of trains were cancelled and only 22 per cent were on time.

University student Sam Whittaker, who lives in Blackburn, often relies on the train for transport.

He said: “It’s really annoying to be honest, my trains are always delayed or cancelled on weekends.

“I might be going to see friends or something in Preston and my train is either late, so it eats into my day, or it's cancelled and then I can’t get there.

“It affects me all the time and it needs to improve.”

A spokesperson for Northern said: “Our customers have experienced higher levels of cancellations in recent weeks and for that we are sorry.

“The underlying reason for services being cancelled remains train crew availability – and the root causes of that are high levels of employee sickness and Sundays being contractually outside of the working week.”
