Plans have gone in to put up new electric vehicle charging points at an East Lancashire pub a stone’s throw from the motorway.

The application would see the charging stations installed at the Thatch and Thistle pub in Surrey Road, Nelson, located next to Junction 13 of the M65.

The pub, operated by the Hungry Horse chain, would see 14 regular parking spaces in its car park converted into eight charging and parking stations for electric vehicles, plus an associated substation and feeder pillar.

A planning statement submitted with the application to Pendle Council said: “Eight designated EV charging bays are created by the proposed development.

“The Alpitronic Hyperchargers proposed are DC Chargers. DC chargers offer fast recharging times and can often be the ideal opportunity to top up quickly.

“In 10 minutes or less, charging could offer a top-up of 100 miles.

“A world-class charging infrastructure is fundamental to delivering net zero road transport.

“This proposal is in line with the Government's strategies and objectives.

“The applicant’s commitment to sustainability is clear, will benefit customers who have already made the switch to electric vehicles and encourage those who haven’t, to come on board.”

It adds: “The proposed development is minor in nature and scale and doesn’t have any adverse impacts on the surrounding area.

“It adds to the existing site offer by providing much-needed electric vehicle infrastructure for site visitors.”

Cadent Gas was consulted on the plans and has raised no objection to the changes.

Public consultation on the application is open until Monday, October 21, and comments can be made by visiting Pendle Council’s website, with a planned date for a decision being November 7.
