Staff at a homeless hub are celebrating after being shortlisted in three categories at a community awards.

Phoenix Hub, based on Clayton Street and run by The Salvation Army, will join groups from across the borough at the Community Volunteers Service (CVS) awards next month.

The homeless drop-in that acts as a one-stop shop for every service that people experiencing homelessness may need, bringing together an optician, housing needs team from the local council, well-being practitioners, and in some cases, a hepatitis C nurse and substance misuse team.

Specialist support worker Sandra Skellern said: “To say we are proud of this achievement is an understatement.

"To even be nominated is fantastic, but to be shortlisted in three prestigious categories is testament to the hard work that every volunteer and client puts in to making Phoenix Hub a success and asset to the local community.

“We want to thank everyone who voted for us.

"We’re still a very new service, only 18 months into our journey, but in that time we have seen our hours extend, our services expand and our footfall greatly increase, proving how needed a service Phoenix Hub is for the homeless and vulnerable people who live in our community.

"We will continue to make a difference to people and help them in their journey to rebuild their lives.”

The awards will take place at King George’s Hall on Thursday, November 7, where all the winners will be announced.
