A warning has been issued following the theft of paving stones in Blackburn and Darwen.

The Blackburn with Darwen Roads team said they had noticed ‘a severe increase’ in the theft of York stone flags from footways across conservation areas in the borough.

Most recently, thefts have taken place on Wellington Street St Johns, Mill Hill Street and Cave Street in Blackburn.

There have also been incidents in Clarence Street, Cavendish Street and South Street in Darwen.

BwD Roads said: “We have received reports from some residents who believed it was the council taking up the flags. This is not true. These are thieves who should be reported to Lancashire Police.

“If you spot any suspicious activity, please report it to Lancashire Police immediately by calling 101 or visiting the police website.

“We appreciate residents' help in this matter to keep our communities safe for everyone.”
