Almost 800 untaxed vehicles were clamped in Blackburn with Darwen last year, with this year’s figures on track to beat that number.

A total of 790 untaxed cars were clamped in the BB1, BB2 and BB3 postcodes in 2023.

There have already been 670 vehicles clamped in the first six months of this year, meaning they are on track to pass the total from last year.

Across all of the East Lancashire postcodes it’s a similar story, with 1,773 untaxed vehicles being clamped in 2023, and 1,732 already being clamped up to the end of June this year, almost passing the year's total in just six months.

The DVLA said most vehicles across the country are taxed correctly and it is working hard to prohibit people from driving while untaxed.

A DVLA spokesperson said: “Whilst more than 98 per cent of vehicles are taxed correctly, the DVLA is committed to keeping untaxed vehicles off our roads.

“We have a range of enforcement measures including fines and penalties and are working hard with our national wheel clamping partner to clamp untaxed vehicles.

“It is easy for drivers to pay their vehicle tax, including using our quick and accessible online services, or spread the cost using Direct Debit.”

If a vehicle is clamped, owners must find out where their vehicle is and pay a release fee.

Owners should call their local police station or NSL, a parking enforcement company, to find out where their vehicle has been taken.

Vehicles can be stored for up to seven days before they can be sold or destroyed.

They can be clamped in the first place for having no tax on a public road even if it is declared as having a SORN, or not on a public road if it has not been declared SORN.
