Repairs have been completed on a burst water main which left residents without water for more than six hours.

Blackburn with Darwen Council's roads team confirmed that water supply should have returned to normal but that there is still work to do on the site to fix the road surface.

The council said they are aware of the disruption this will cause and have requested an accelerated reinstatement from United Utilities.

Manual traffic control has also been requested to operate at the junction of Preston New Road, Billinge End Road and Revidge Road tomorrow (Monday, October 7).

A spokesperson for BwD Roads said: "The repair has now been completed and residents should have their normal water supplies restored.

"There is still work to do on site to reinstate the road surface, which we expect to be completed by Tuesday.

"There is contingency for Wednesday but we have requested an accelerated reinstatement from United Utilities as we're aware of the amount of disruption these works will cause.

"We have also requested manual control between 7am and 7pm to manage traffic flows through the junction."

Residents in the area were left without water for hours on Saturday, and two tankers were needed to pump water back into the system.

One resident said: "We've not had water for six hours. There are elderly people and people with disabilities who don't know what's happening. There's been a lack of communication."

In an update issued at 12.45pm yesterday, United Utilities said it was taking "longer than expected" to start work on the issue.

They said: "Our team are doing all they can to get around this and the repair will be carried out as soon as it is safe to do so."

The company was contacted for further comment on Saturday.
