Update: Water is beginning to return to houses now.

Residents in an area of Blackburn have been left without water for more than six hours due to a burst pipe.

United Utilities say the cause has been found at the junction of Preston New Road, Revidge Road, and Billinge End Road, but it's taking longer than expected for their team to sort the problem.

One resident said they have been without water since around 7am and there had been no communication forthcoming from United Utilities.

Two water tankers could be seen pumping water through the system on Preston New Road between the Revidge Road and Billinge Avenue junctions.

They were set to move further down at another section.

The resident, from the Beardwood area, said: "We've not had water for six hours. There are elderly people and people with disabilities who don't know what's happening. There's been a lack of communication.

"We've not been given any water bottles. It's horrendous. There's people who need water."

The resident said he and other people have had to go round to their neighbours and explain what is happening.

He added: "The service from United Utilities has been non-existent."

In an update issued on their website at around 12.45pm today, United Utilities said: "We're sorry we haven't got your water flowing yet. It's taking our team longer than expected to start work on our network.

"Our team are doing all they can to get around this and the repair will be carried out as soon as it is safe to do so.

"In the meantime we have our fleet of water tankers in the area that will be pumping in to get your taps flowing as soon as possible. When your supply comes back it might take a while for your pressure to return to normal and this may fluctuate until the repair is completed."

United Utilities have been contacted for further comment.
