A Blackburn community centre is backing a new campaign is urging people to ‘think again’ if they attempt to bypass gas meters.
Cadent Gas has teamed up with Stay Energy Safe for a new campaign this winter to raise awareness of gas theft, help deter people from tampering with their gas meter, and encourage people to report if they come across it.
The campaign focuses on the dangers gas theft poses on individuals, families and communities, and the disastrous effects it can bring.
The campaign is being backed by Bangor Street Community Centre, which is a Cadent ‘Centre for Warmth’.
The centre is hosting a number of carbon monoxide safety and energy saving sessions for people across Blackburn with Darwen.
Ali Hussain, from the centre, said: "It is important for families to be aware of the dangers.
"At the centre we are gearing up to share more awareness of gas safety and saving energy ahead of the winter.
"Anyone wanting further information can pop in fill in one of our household awareness forms.
"They may qualify for a free carbon monoxide alarm and other products."
The campaign features a video of a normal family of four, mum and dad with their son and daughter, going about their everyday lives at home when dad starts to tamper with the gas meter.
The dad with all good intentions, is trying to help keep the bills down by tampering with his gas meter.
After some tugging and tinkering there is a release of gas, resulting in an explosion, taking the lives of his whole family.
Residents can look out for the following relating to gas meters:
Meter connected in reverse: Meter is facing backwards so display is unreadable, or pipes have been connected the wrong way round.
Smell of gas: A smell of gas near the meter.
Extra piping: Rubber tubing or metal pipes are around or in place of the meter.
Meter display missing or static: No visible dial or counter, and there may be a hole or cogs showing. Reading doesn’t increase with gas use, or screen is blank – even when button is pressed.
Working but no credit: Meter shows credit has run out, but gas is still available.
