A former Chinese takeaway could become a house of multiple occupancy (HMO) under new plans.

The Canton Chef takeaway in Church Street, Clitheroe, has a number of floors above it which have become surplus to requirements since its closure.

Under plans submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council by Nester Estates Ltd, the upper floor could be turned into a “high-quality” HMO while the commercial space at the bottom could house a beauty salon and another commercial unit.

A planning statement said: “The repurposing of the existing takeaway will revitalise this historically significant building in an area which holds precedent of similar conversions.

“The conversion will repurpose the existing upper floors into a four-bed, high-end HMO unit.

"This adaptive reuse approach will breathe new life into the building, offering flexible accommodation options for visitors while respecting the building’s historical significance.

“The proposed conversion of the former takeaway into two commercial units offers significant benefits to the local community.

“The conversion will stimulate economic activity through increased footfall in the vicinity.

"The provision of two new businesses in the area supports the local economy and increases business within the area.”

The statement added that the repurposing of the building represents an opportunity to “breathe new life” into a historically significant building while meeting the needs of the town.

It’s not known exactly when the takeaway ceased operations but the last reviews for it posted on TripAdvisor were in 2023.
