The leader of Hyndburn Council has written to Foreign Secretary David Lammy calling for the UK to step up its efforts to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Cllr Munsif Dad's letter warns the Israel/Hamas conflict is having 'devastating consequences' for women and young children in Gaza, where tens of thousands of people have died.

The letter to Mr Lammy reads: "I am writing to you on behalf of concerned residents of Hyndburn regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

"Recent reports from 16 United Nations humanitarian relief organisations indicate Israel has blocked 83 per cent of food aid to Gaza nearly a year after the beginning of the conflict.

"This is an alarming increase from the 34 per cent of aid blocked in 2023 and it is having devastating consequences for the civilians of Gaza, especially young children and women.

"Due to this blockade, families in Gaza are now going from two meals a day to just one meal every other day and that in many cases is the best case scenario.

"Such conditions are not only inhumane but also unacceptable in the modern world.

"As we witness this deteriorating situation, it is clear that the international community must act urgently to prevent further suffering and loss of loss of further life and work towards de-escalating tensions in the region.

"On behalf of Hyndburn residents I urge you to redouble efforts to push for an immediate ceasefire that includes the release of hostages and civilians held without charge, including doctors, as well as advocating for the unrestricted delivery of food and medical aid to innocent civilians in Gaza.

"It is vital that the uk government used its influence to call for an end to the violence and to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those who desperately need it."
