A care home in Blackburn has improved its Care Quality Commission (CQC)  rating, moving from 'requires improvement' to 'good'.

Northwood Nursing and Residential Care, on Preston New Road, has been upgraded to a ‘good’ rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following its recent inspection.

Previously rated ‘requires improvement,’ the home, that provides accommodation and nursing care for up to 27 people, has made notable advancements in areas like safety, care, and effectiveness.

According to the report, which was published earlier this month, people living in the home said they were happy with the care they received. Staff are said to “help people gain skills and live an independent life as possible”.

Residents and their families have praised the care staff, with one relative describing how staff "jump through hoops" for their loved ones.

One person said they “loved” living there adding that they were treated with kindness and respect.

The report said: “Systems were in place to carry out structured assessments for people to live at Northwood Nursing and Residential Care.

“Relatives told us they felt welcome visiting the home at any time."

Staff also said they made sure people’s care, support and treatment meets their needs and preferences.  This includes meeting people’s personal, cultural and social needs. This was reflected in the foods purchased for people and activities people valued.

Last year, the report criticised the site for its medication. The CQC noted that medicines had not always been administered as prescribed, and the stock of medicines in the home did not match what records stated had been administered, raising concerns that some medicines may not have been given correctly.

The latest report found improvements are still required in this area, with some issues around medication management remaining.

The report said: “The provider is required to provide an action plan to assure us what they will do to make necessary improvements at the service.

“The provider now assessed and mitigated risks related to the environment, storage of thickeners and accident and incidents.”

The site is said to have a clear management structure and relatives spoke positively about the way the service was managed.

Staff said they felt valued and respected at work and were confident they were supported by an approachable manager.
