Extra room is set to be allowed for motorists so they can safely leave a busy estate in Darwen.

People living behind St Peter's Church mainly use Green Street East to access Railway Road and then either the A666 or Knott Street and Robin Bank Road.

But inconsiderate drivers on Railway Road often park close to the Green Street East and Railway Road junction - severely restricting sightlines for oncoming traffic.

Now proposals have been drawn up to extend parking restrictions on Railway Road to give estate motorists a fighting chance.

One former resident said: "You need to be keeping your wits about you at that junction oftentimes anyway, with people crossing from the takeaway or Wetherspoons without looking.

"At least now both drivers and pedestrians will be more visible as you're coming out onto Railway Road."

A traffic order has been signed off Cllr Quesir Mahmood, borough growth boss, so the proposal can be advertised.

In a report accompanying his decision, it says: "In 2023 a local councillor contacted network management on behalf of residents in the vicinity of Green Street East, Darwen.

"The residents advised that when vehicles are parked on Railway Road, either side of the junction on

Green Street East are causing a potential hazard as they are reducing the visibility of oncoming traffic approaching the junction on both approaches.

"Railway Road is a main route in Darwen off the A666 Bolton Road which provides access to the station and several amenities, including the Library Theatre and the market.

"There is a one-way system in place on the roads accessed to the east of Railway Road, with traffic travelling in an easterly direction on South Street, and traffic travelling in a westerly direction on Green Street East. Vehicles from Green Street East then exit onto Railway Road."

Councillors have been told that a site visit confirmed the visibility issues at the junction - with officers believing the existing restriction was 'too short' to be effective.

An accident was reported at the junction in September while the proposals were being drawn up.
