A couple whose motto is “work hard play hard” are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary next month.

Olywn, 85 and Jack Scott, 87, tied the knot in 1958 and have enjoyed spending the last 65 years together.

The couple, who will mark their incredible 'blue sapphire' anniversary on Thursday, October 3, said highlights of their lives together include time spent at their caravan and spending time with their family in Hyndburn.

The pair have arranged a party at Enfield Cricket Club to celebrate the remarkable milestone with a buffet and plenty of games for their five great-grandchildren to enjoy.

Olywn, who wed her beau Jack when she was aged 20, said: “We have always been together, we have worked hard and played hard, that is our motto. We are still young at heart.

“In the same way as everybody else we have our ups and downs, but we have always been together.

“Everything has been amazing. My favourite memories are of the family and the great-grandchildren.”

After meeting on a blind date at the cinema, Olywn was unimpressed that Jack didn’t pay for her entry, but it was a small bump in the road.

A month after their wedding day Jack, who was 22 at the time, had to leave to fulfil his national service and was gone for two years, only able to return for the birth of their first daughter Deborah.

Once his national service was completed, Jack worked as an engineer at textile manufacturer Howard & Bullough in Accrington for 49 years and retired at 72, while Olwyn was a weaver in the cotton mills for 47 years.

She added: “We are still together, and we are still alive, and it is a good feeling to get to the milestone.”

Their granddaughter Reanne is incredibly proud of her grandparents, who she described as the core of the family.

She said: “They showed us the way and gave us really good guidance.

"The fact they have been together for so long as such a good couple shows us what you can do when you put your mind to it and work together.

“I think they are a very genuine pair of people, and they say what they think and that is what has got them so far.

“There is no holding back or stepping back and they just come together and get on with it.”

In their spare time, Olywn enjoys shopping and Jack reads the newspapers, with both enjoying spending time with their grand and great-grandchildren.
