There was hardly a spare seat to be had at Blackburn reference library when this photo was taken in 1926.
The library was was a key source of information for folk across East Lancashire with all the daily newspapers and monthly periodicals available free of charge.
The sign in the background may say ‘Silence is Requested’ but you suspect that it was far more than a request. The eagle-eyed librarian on the right would, you could be sure, quick to stop any talking.
