A couple have submitted plans to convert a barn into a four-bedroom home.

The barn is at Writtenstone Farm in Writtenstone Lane, Longridge, and the submissions also include plans to create a garage, the conversion of an outbuilding, and the demolition of another outbuilding.

The plans have been submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council by Mr and Mrs D Norris of Dilworth Lane, Longridge.

A planning statement said: “The barn to be converted to a dwelling is a traditional and substantial two-storey barn built of stone with a slate roof.

“A modest garden area is proposed to the west of the barn conversion which adjoins the existing garden to Writtenstone Farm to the north.

“The structural appraisal dated February 2024 confirms that the main barn is suitable for conversion. It does not indicate the need for complete or substantial reconstruction.

“The character of the building, its materials and design, are worthy of retention and it has a genuine history of being used for agricultural purposes.

“The Heritage Impact Assessment concludes that the conversion of the barn to a dwelling is the optimum viable use for the main barn and will halt any deterioration.”

The statement adds that without a new viable use, the building is likely to deteriorate resulting in the loss of “significant historic fabric.”

It also says the conversion will sustain the historic and rural character of the building and be enhanced through the proposed improvements.
