Some motorists in Blackburn might get a ticket in the coming weeks as police crackdown on bad parking.

Blackburn police officers have received reports from residents about vehicles that were parked on the pavement.

On Wednesday, (September 11), police issued tickets to vehicles that have caused an obstruction to pedestrians.

Anyone with other issues in the area has been urged to get in touch.

A police spokesperson said: “After reports from residents in the area over vehicles parking on the pavement, we have today responded and issued tickets to vehicles that have been parked up causing obstructions to pedestrians.

“If you have any more issues in the area, please let the neighbourhood team know.”

Is it illegal to park on the pavement?

According the Highway Code, it is illegal to park on the pavement in London but elsewhere in the UK this is not the case. However, you can be fined if your vehicle is causing an unnecessary obstruction of the pavement.

A spokesperson for insurance comparison site, Compare The Market, said: “It’s illegal to park on the pavement in London.

"Since 1974, rule 244 of the Highway Code has stated that drivers ‘must not park partially or wholly on the pavement in London’. This explicitly forbids you from doing so.

“Outside of London, pavement parking rules are a bit vague. Rule 244 states that you ‘should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it’.

"As a general default rule, you shouldn’t park on the pavement unless there’s a clear sign indicating otherwise.

“Pavement parking creates difficulties for disabled people, pedestrians and children. If your vehicle is causing ‘unnecessary obstruction of the pavement’, you could be fined.”
