RESIDENTS in an East Lancashire borough are facing a shake-up of where they vote in elections.

Hyndburn Council has launched a review of polling stations and polling districts to make sure they are in the right place.

And the local authority has asked residents for their views on where they want to vote.

In accordance with the Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013, the council must undertake a review of the polling districts and polling places in its area before January 31, 2025.

Consulting local people is an essential part of this review process, taking into consideration any formal feedback from residents and stakeholders - especially concerning accessibility of polling stations.

The review, which began on September 9, will also look at the polling districts, meaning how each ward is split into voting areas (or districts).

Jane Ellis, Hyndburn Borough’s returning officer, said: “We want to hear the views of all residents who are eligible to vote, that is those aged 18 years and over, with a particular focus on those who are disabled or organisations that work with people with any type of disability.

"We want everyone who can vote to be able to use their democratic right.

"We want to know which stations have good accessibility and those that don’t (and why).

"It would also be helpful to hear suggestions about other places that may be used as polling stations.”

Further details are available on the ‘Polling Station Review’ section of the Hyndburn Council website, including the borough’s returning officer’s comments and proposals.

Residents can make their views by post to Electoral Services, Hyndburn Borough Council, Scaitcliffe House, Ormerod Street, Accrington, BB5 0PF or by email to PollingstationReview@hyndburnbc.gov.uk.

The consultation is now live.

To take part all comments must be submitted by the October 18.

Residents’ views will be taken into consideration and the final proposals will be debated, with a decision to be made by a meeting of Full Council on November 7.
