A home in Reedley, that was designed by an architect, is thought to be one of Lancashire’s first modern homes – and it could be yours.

Domus, a grade II listed home, has been described as a “modern masterpiece” and it was designed by architect Alan Chambers. It was commissioned for Eric Cookson and his wife, in 1958.

The space has been “meticulously renovated and restored by the current owners”.

The home is in a secluded area, concealed from view by landscaped gardens and trees.

According to the property description, the house is “a series of glazed geometric forms” and the materials used to make the home were thoughtfully chosen and consists of dark brown brick, white rendered concrete, red ribbon glazing.

Inside, the architect made great use of space and light and it has an open-plan design. The living spaces “flow seamlessly across the upper level”.  Terrazzo tiles, marble floors, and aluminium door furniture can be found throughout.

When it is colder, you can huddle up next to a suspended log burner which also acts as a natural centrepiece for the room.

The kitchen is spacious, with a central island and plenty of workspace for cooking. Glass doors open out onto a south-facing balcony, which would be a great spot to enjoy your morning coffee.

Ideal for entertaining guests, an entertainment room has a circular underfloor-lit glass dance floor and a bar built into one corner.

A wall of bespoke bookshelves line one wall, and glass doors slide from here to the terrace.

There are four bedrooms in the property and the master room benefits from a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom facilities.

The northern part of the house is designed to stay cool during the warmer. This is also where two bedrooms are situated. Both are quiet with built-in cabinetry and a shared bathroom complete with the original bathtub. There is also a study on this level.

The property is situated on around 5.7 acres of land that consists of “swathes of lawn” bounded by “a thicket of native trees and borders dense with perennial planting”.

A spokesperson for The Modern House said: “Designed by the architect Alan Chambers, this exceptional Grade II-listed modern masterpiece is set into the gentle slope of its five-and-a-half acre gardens in Reedley, Lancashire.

“Intended for creating, communing, and entertaining, Domus is thought to be one of the first modern houses in the county, commissioned for Eric Cookson and his wife in 1958.

"Rooted in its peaceful setting, the fluid, open-plan living spaces of over 3,100 sq ft have been meticulously renovated and restored by the current owners. While retaining a distinct sense of quiet and seclusion, this remarkable home lies within easy reach of Reedley's town centre.”
