Blackburn's new MP Adnan Hussain said he will be joining a new Independent group in parliament alongside Jeremy Corbyn.

The new MP for the town, who narrowly won the seat in July on a pro-Gaza ticket, said he would be teaming up with four other MPs to form the 'Independent Alliance'.

The group is made up of other MPs elected on similar Gaza-focused messages, along with former Labour leader Corbyn who ran successfully as an independent after being booted from the party.

Mr Hussain said: “I am very pleased to announce that I, alongside my four other Independent MP colleagues; Jeremy Corbyn, Shockat Adam, Iqbal Mohamed and Ayoub Khan, have formed a Parliamentary group 'Independent Alliance'.

“My colleagues and I hope that with the formation of this group, we will be better placed in Parliament to represent the sentiments and concerns of our constituents.”

The Independent Alliance will form the joint fourth-largest group on the opposition benches, alongside Reform UK and the DUP.

Mr Hussain's shock win came after he took Blackburn from Labour's Kate Hollern by just 132 votes.

Shockat Adam beat then-shadow minister Jonathan Ashworth by 979 votes to become MP for Leicester South, while Mr Corbyn won the Islington North a seat he has held since 1983 as a Labour MP with 49.7 per cent of the vote.

Ex-Lib Dem councillor Ayoub Khan overturned a 15,000 majority to take Birmingham Perry Barr from Labour's Khalid Mahmood, winning by 507 votes.

Iqbal Mohamed won the newly created Dewsbury and Batley seat, formed from parts of old constituencies held by the Conservatives and Labour, taking 41 per cent of the vote.
