Tributes have been paid to Colne Market’s longest-serving trader who has died after a short illness.

Michael Maybury and his wife, Nona, had been trading as Michael’s Butchers and Farm Shop at Colne Market for 40 years.

Leader of Pendle Borough Council, Cllr Asjad Mahmood, said: “We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Michael's family at this sad time.

“Michael was a loyal, long-standing and well-known Colne Market trader, having served residents and visitors to the town for four decades.

“He has been described by fellow Colne Market traders and customers as ‘a people’s person’, well-liked by all those who knew him and who will be sadly missed.”

Michael's funeral will take place on Friday, September 6.

The cortege will pass Colne Market at 10am on its way to St Thomas' Church, Barrowford, for the funeral service, where those who want to pay their respects are invited to. This will be followed by a private burial.

Family flowers only are requested, but donations can be given at the Bay Horse at Roughlee and will be donated to The Brain Tumour charity.

Fellow traders and shoppers have paid tributes to Michael.

One woman said: “It would be wonderful to name the new market after Mick - he did so much for it and will do so much. I loved the photo of him with the cow in the old market hall that hung in the shop. RIP Michael.”

A man said: “Mum worked at the side of him for many years in the market. He was well known. He was a people's person. I'm so sorry to hear this news.”

Another woman added: “This is such very sad news. Lovely man. He will be missed by all. Sending sincere sympathy to his wife and all the family.”
