A floating broadcast is set to be launched on the Leeds Liverpool Canal in Blackburn to invoke the spirit of Radio Caroline.

Drift, a programme devised by the Super Slow Way initiative, will be broadcasting from aboard the Bill Hunt barge on the waterway tomorrow, Saturday.

And the project, hosted in partnership with Blackburn with Darwen's young peoples services department, will be tapping into the spirit of pirate radio pioneers as they go live on their Mixcloud page online and 106.7 Ribble FM.

Artist Lucia Scazzocchio, of Social Broadcasts, and Studio Esse have been working with young people from Blackburn with Darwen to transform the Bill Hunt barge into a floating studio for the experience and customies their own 'jingle shed' on the banks.

A Super Slow Way spokesman said: "Radio broadcasts from boats have a long history, with the iconic Radio Caroline making waves in the North Sea and inspiring music radio for years to come.

"On a smaller scale, and with none of the radio piracy implications this summer, artist Lucia Scazzocchio of Social Broadcasts has been working with young people from Blackburn to transform the much-loved Bill Hunt barge into a floating micro-radio studio on the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

"From its mooring at Eanam Wharf, Drift will become a live community radio station on the water, broadcasting the life and sounds of the canal, both with and by the people who are connected to this region of Lancashire."

Coverage will include interviews and group discussions, live music and poetry, pre-recorded radio features, field recordings and sound artworks created as part of a series of audio residencies which have taken place across the linear park this summer.

Highlights include 'Going with the Flow', with DJ Shazza, live music by Scott Robertson, an interview with Pat Phizackles, daughter of Bill Hunt, and features on protest songs, BwD Food Alliance and Nightsafe.

The moored boat will be the centrepiece of a colourful schedule planned for the day, according to organisers, from 10am to 7pm.

The spokesman added: "They have an eclectic programme planned for Saturday at Eanam Wharf, with the live radio broadcast from the Bill Hunt barge happening throughout.

"Alongside the broadcast there’ll be a pop up Street Market featuring Metoatee, Jane’s Bakes and more.

"There will also be Caribbean food on offer, barge trips, dance performances with Matthew Rawcliffe, live music, a Talkaoke Tipi and a range of creative workshops."
