A road is partially closed and United Utilities are investigating, after a ‘sinkhole’ opened up in Darwen.

Residents have been sharing images of works taking place in Lynwood Avenue where a ‘sinkhole’ appeared this week.

Blackburn with Darwen Council said it has had workers who have been on site investigating the ‘sinkhole’ since Tuesday (August 27).

Today, it was confirmed the top section of the road is closed and there are diversion signs in place to deal with the issue

The council confirmed the issue is a water leak and said United Utilities is now on site to fix the problem.

A council spokesperson said: “The top section of the road is closed however there are diversion signs in place.

"We have been on-site investigating this since yesterday. The issue is a water leak and so United Utilities are now on site to fix the problem.”

United Utilities has been approached for comment.
