Crowds packed into Accrington town centre today (August 24) to witness the 2024 #AmazingAccrington Soapbox Challenge.

The morning races saw 20 homemade karts speed down the track on Blackburn Road towards the town hall before bending around onto the finish at Church Street.

The 10 fastest times from the morning session then made it through to the second round at 2pm, where the fastest racers would be crowned the champion.

Hundreds of people lined Blackburn Road, which was sealed off by fencing and hay bales to protect against any crashes.

Outside the town hall there was additional entertainment in the form of a band, while the interval between racing round was filled with Ukrainian dancers and a Brazilian samba band.

The second round got underway in the afternoon but only nine teams made it down the hill, with the final team having to pull out after their steering column snapped when taking the kart up.

The race was won by The Senator Group, while North Lancs Training Group came second and Mission Improbable in their Thunderbird 2-inspired kart came third.
