Therapy dog Boris will be the star attraction at a care home as staff and residents celebrate International Dog Day today, Monday, August 26.
HC-One’s Dove Court Care Home, in Burnley, will pay thanks to canine companionship by honouring the joy created by their frequent visitor.
Boris has brought many smiles to the residents of Dove Court, a care home which provides residential, nursing and dementia care.
Regular weekly visits from Boris have become a highlight for many.
Steven Molloy, a blind resident, said: "I just love him; he is such a good boy!"
Mr Molloy always looks forward to his weekly visits from Boris, as they brighten up his day.
Rita Summerscales, another resident of Dove Court, enjoys walking Boris.
For her, Boris' visits bring back fond memories of her own dog named Sophie, a Lhasa Apso.
Susan Gulaiczuk and Gordon Cligram, also residents at Dove Court, share their delight in Boris’ visits.
Ms Gulaiczuk loves seeing animals and always appreciates a cuddle from Boris.
Mr Cligram, on the other hand, likes to give Boris a treat during his weekly sessions.
International Dog Day, observed every year on August 26, was established by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige in 2004.
The day aims to raise awareness about animal welfare and promote adoption.
It also highlights the importance for people to take better care of their pets and make responsible choices in pet ownership.
Wellbeing co-ordinator at Dove Court Care Home, Nicola Martin, who helps arrange Boris’ visits, said: "Our residents look forward to their weekly visits from our therapy dog Boris and can’t wait to give him extra cuddles and stroke him."
Stephanie Tillotson, another wellbeing co-ordinator at Dove Court, added: "It’s lovely to see the residents faces light up when they see Boris, he is such a friendly lovable dog who loves to come in and see our residents."
