United Utilities was called to a burst water main in Darwen last night (August 21) and the team spent hours in attendance.

There is a burst water main at the junction of Watery Lane and The Clough. United Utilities began investigating at around 11pm last night.

In an update, issued at around 7.30am this morning, the team said they fixed the burst but after turning the water back on more damage was caused.

As the damage was in the middle of the carriageway, a short section of Watery Lane, between the junction with The Clough and Spring Vale Road, is closed. A signed diversion is in place. The road will reopen early next week.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We’ve found the cause of no water or low pressure to be a burst main located on the junction of Watery Lane and The Clough.

“Now that we’ve identified the cause of the problem, our team will assess the issue and start the repair work shortly.

“We’re sorry if you’re still experiencing no water or poor pressure today. We fixed the burst on the junction of Watery Lane and The Clough however when we have turned the water back on the pressure passing through the pipe has caused further damage.

“We’ll need to return to carry out further work to get this resolved. Please be assured, that our team is doing all they can to get your taps flowing again.”

In an update, a United Utilities spokesperson said: “The team have repaired the damaged water main and supplies are being restored.

"As the damaged water main was in the middle of the carriageway, it has been necessary to close a short section of Watery Lane between the junction with The Clough and Spring Vale Road.

"A signed diversion is in place and access has been maintained to homes and businesses and the road will reopen early next week. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
