This imposing building was one of Burnley’s most popular places of entertainment in the pre and postwar years.
Situated on the corner of Manchester Road and Red Lion Street, the Savoy Cinema had opened in 1922 and had been the town’s main cinema until the arrival of the Odeon in 1937.
As well as showing the latest films, you can see it also operated a cafe with a queue forming outside neighbouring Oddie’s shop when this photo was taken in 1953. Rationing was still in place at this time.
The Savoy was demolished in 1956 and the site became home to Martin’s Bank and later a clothing store.
