Unless you are a Rossendale native or into local history, it’s likely you won’t recognise this rather splendid hall pictured in 1963.
This photo shows Carter Place Hall near Haslingden, a 28-room mansion that had been built around 1850.
The property has caused much debate over the years - both to its location and also its name. Some say it was in Rising Bridge but other say it was in Acre. As for the name, some claim it is simply Carter Hall or Carterplace Hall.
Originally the home of first the Turner family and then the Worsley family, the Grade II listed hall was demolished in 1989. It had lain empty for a number of years at that point and had been badly damaged in a fire.
The grounds were turned into a caravan park and the original doorway was left standing.
In 1977, the hall was used as a location for a Granada TV adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Hard Times starring Timothy West and Edward Fox.
