Blackburn is one of the best places in the UK to work if you have a maths degree, according to new research.

The town was ranked ninth for young professionals with a mathematics degree by Calcworkshop, a maths education platform.

The research analysed data on maths-related jobs, salaries, and other factors to determine the best places for maths graduates.

Leeds topped the list, followed by Manchester and London.

Blackburn was found to have an average salary of £40,528 for maths-related roles, which is 45 per cent higher than the average salary in the town.

Out of this salary, 65 per cent is expected to be spent on household expenditures. There were also around 160 maths-related jobs available.

Overall, this gave Blackburn a final index score of 64.54 out of 100.

Jenn Stull, founder of Calcworkshop, said: "As university students prepare for results day in the coming months, it’s time for soon-to-be graduates to start thinking about their futures, including where they will choose to begin their careers as young professionals.

"But remember, location is everything.

"When searching for a role, graduates should consider the average wages and household expenditures per location by using this study as a useful guide."

The research examined data from Reed.com on four factors: the number of maths-related jobs advertised in each area, the average salary of maths-related employment, the percentage increase of a maths-related salary compared to the average wage, and the percentage of a maths-related salary that is expected to be spent on household expenditures in each town and city.

The four factors were then weighted equally and given a final index score out of 100 to determine the best cities for maths graduates to start their careers.

Poole was ranked as the worst place for maths graduates, followed by Maidstone and Southend-on-Sea.
