A mosque in Accrington has urged members of its community not to engage with potential protesters.

A law firm in the town which specialises in immigration cases is on a list of targets which could be hit by protesters that was shared on social media.

It appears the list is made up of immigration clinics and lawyers across the country which aim to provide advice to people on visas and other legal services.

In a statement, Raza Jamia Masjid, based in Lower Antley Street, said: "We strongly advise the Masjid members and the Muslim community not to engage with or counter-march against the planned far-right demonstration.

"For decades, we have lived peacefully with our neighbours in Accrington. Engaging with or attending the far-right march could lead to civil unrest and violence, as seen in other parts of the country, and will be counter-productive.

"We call on the Muslim community to demonstrate unity by peacefully attending the Masjid on the day of the march and allow the police to monitor and manage the protesters as they deem appropriate."

This second round of planned marches comes after a small group gathered in Blackburn on Saturday but quickly dispersed.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We are monitoring information at a local and national level around possible disruption, enabling us to have the right level of resources on duty to respond to any incidents safely and robustly in Lancashire, where required to do so.

“We continue to work with communities and partners to ensure we are ready to respond to any concerns or incidents and have been grateful for the public’s support.

“If anyone has any information regarding pre-planned disorder or criminality, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The Arndale shopping centre in Accrington also confirmed they will be closing early following reports of the protest taking place.

They said: "We have been made aware of a far-right protest scheduled to take place tomorrow (Wednesday, August 7).

"In light of recent severe attacks in multiple cities, we have decided to close early tomorrow, at 3pm.

"We understand that this early closure may cause inconvenience, however the safety and security of everyone within our premises are our utmost priority."
