This traditional Lancashire pub not only impresses regulars with its landscape but also its food, service and drinks.
The award-winning Grey Mare, Belthorn, makes a perfect location for some good food and drinks after a fresh walk.
Can you introduce yourself and your role in the pub?
My name is Becky and I run the pub with my husband Steven. We have had the pub for 26 years and seen it go through two refurbishments.
What is the pub most well-known for?
I’d say it’s well known for its great service, fantastic food and amazing views.
What type of food do you serve?
It’s primarily British pub grub but we do a wide variety. We have a specials board that changes weekly and there are all sorts of different foods to try on there that are up to date with what is currently trending.
There is a mid-week special which has proven extremely popular, nine dishes from our menu that are put down to £9.95 served Monday to Friday.
These are served all day from 12pm till 8pm.
Are there any drinks you specialise in selling to customers?
We are a Thwaites pub, so we serve Thwaites cask ale. We have original ale, IPA, Gold and the Mare Onth’ Moor which is very popular here.
Can you tell us more about the refurbishments for the pub?
It was for an outside marquee that we use as our dog-friendly area.
This was big for us, as we have held weddings, christenings and baby showers in there, but we are hoping to extend even more next year and turn that into another permanent structure.
Just because it has been so popular with the lovely views we get of the moors, so the next one will include a glass feature where you can see out into the fields.”
Could you talk us through the awards you’ve won?
We have been in the final for a national award with the British Institute of Innkeeping.
National Innovation in training awards rewarded for how well we train our staff which we actually came first place in. Some in house awards with Thwaites for best premium pub food. As well as Pub of the Year with Thwaites.
Is there a certain season you do better in or is it busy all year round?
I’d say it is all the way throughout the year because we always provide a different vibe in the pub for each season with the marquee and big windows.
Where are your dog-friendly areas?
Half of the pub inside is actually dog friendly as well so we recommend if you’re bringing your furry four-legged friends that you just give us a call so we can make sure to have a table in the dog-friendly areas.
