A man threatened to kill a teenage boy three times during an altercation in a park where he swung at him with a knife.

Kyle Kaylor, 20, appeared in the dock at Preston Crown Court having pleaded guilty to attempted section 18 wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of a bladed article.

Kaylor, who was 19 at the time of the offences on January 20, threatened the 16-year-old boy at a park near his home in Cog Lane, Burnley.

Helen Larton, prosecuting, said the victim was walking down Cog Lane and saw a friend talking to Kaylor through an open window.

He then saw Kaylor leave his house with a knife and begin to chase the other child towards Hargher Clough Park.

When they reached the park he asked Kaylor ‘why are you chasing kids’ to which Kaylor responded saying ‘I’m going to kill you’ three times.

He then grabbed the victim by the throat with one hand before swinging his other hand towards him, catching him with a glancing blow to the back of the head.

Kaylor then made a stabbing motion towards the victim’s ribs, though only managed to cut his clothing.

The victim ran away to a friend’s house where the police were called. He had suffered a small wound just above his ear from the first blow.

Kaylor was identified by a video identification procedure and answered no comment to all questions.

Officers said he found the ordeal funny and he said he was ‘being asked about something he hadn’t done.’

Kaylor has four convictions for eight previous offences, including possession of a bladed article in August 2022 and robbery in November 2022.

As well as these offences, Kaylor admitted being in breach of a suspended sentence regarding the robbery and being in breach of a community order imposed last year for two offences of taking a child from a responsible person.

Stuart Duke, mitigating, claimed Kaylor showed genuine remorse for his offences and had “made real efforts to turn his life around in custody” by cooperating with mental health services and undergoing therapy.

Recorder Ayesha Siddiqi, sentencing, said: “You don’t need me to tell you that you shouldn’t be behaving like this towards anyone, but this was a 16-year-old who got caught up in your aggressive behaviour.

“It was extremely lucky he wasn’t more badly injured.

“Despite the fact you have been given a chance by courts previously, you have continued to re-offend.

“You committed these offences while subject to court orders. It needs to stop. You need to stop this offending behaviour.”

Kaylor was sentenced to four years and three months in a young offenders’ institute, made up of a 48-month sentence for these offences and a three-month activation of the previous suspended sentence.

The previous community order was revoked.
