Seven Lancashire police officers were injured after riots broke out in Southport on Tuesday (July 30).

Lancashire Police confirmed the officers were injured as part of its mutual aid response with Merseyside Police.

The officers were injured during a serious escalation in disorder. Officers suffered injuries including a suspected broken hand, cuts and bruises, as well as a concussion.

They all received medical treatment and are recovering.

Deputy chief constable Sam Mackenzie, said: “Our officers, alongside colleagues from regional forces, were deployed to Southport following a serious escalation in disorder. They were met with violence and thuggery in an incredibly challenging and dangerous disorder area.

“In addition to dozens of Merseyside Police officers who were injured, seven officers from Lancashire Police were injured. All have received medical attention and their welfare addressed in person.

“All officers demonstrated bravery and courage in a very difficult situation, and I would like to thank those officers and their colleagues for their actions.

“We continue to offer our support to Merseyside Police and the community of Southport.”

Police in Merseyside have called in support from forces across the region to avoid a second night of rioting in tragedy-hit Southport.

Violence erupted near the town’s mosque on Tuesday after false rumours circulated online about the suspect in a mass stabbing that claimed the lives of three girls and left eight more children and two adults injured.

Four people have been arrested over the unrest so far, which saw 53 officers and three police dogs injured.

The Prime Minister said rioters in Southport on Tuesday evening had “hijacked” a vigil for victims and would “feel the full force of the law”.

Hyndburn Council's leader has sent the borough's condolences to those affected by the mass stabbing in Southport in which three children have died.

Cllr Munsif Dad used the authority's cabinet meeting to send a message of sympathy following Monday's attack which left three young children dead, eight injured (six critically) and two adults also in hospital in a critical condition.

Cllr Dad said: "On behalf of the council I'd like to offer our deepest sympathies to all those affected by the shocking attach which took place in Southport.

"Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the three young girls who were tragically killed and we pray for the recovery of those who remain in a critical condition after the attack.”
