Hyndburn Council's leader has sent the borough's condolences to those affected by the mass stabbing in Southport in which three children have died.

Cllr Munsif Dad used the authority's cabinet meeting to send a message of sympathy following Monday's attack which left three young children dead, eight injured (six critically) and two adults also in hospital in a critical condition.

He started Tuesday night's session with a brief statement.

Cllr Dad said: "On behalf of the council I'd like to offer our deepest sympathies to all those affected by the shocking attach which took place in Southport.

"Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the three young girls who were tragically killed and we pray for the recovery of those who remain in a critical condition after the attack.

"I'd also like to thank the brave members of the public, police and emergency services for their quick response to such appalling circumstances."
