Dozens of vehicles have been caught speeding across Burnley as police target hotspots across the town.

Police descended on the Queensgate area and Lakeland Way.

Officers set up patrols in the Queensgate area after reports that people were using the road as a ‘rat run’ from Windermere to Colne Road.

In 30 minutes, 30 vehicles were checked and five were found to be speeding over the 20mph limit for the area. Owners will now receive a warning letter.

On Lakeland Way, police carried out checks on 105 vehicles in an hour and found 31 driving above the speed limit.

One vehicle was speeding at 41mph in a 20mph zone.

The owners of these vehicles will now receive a warning letter.

A police spokesperson said: “We are concentrating on this and other roads due to residents’ complaints and previous speed operations that clearly show the excess speed on these roads.

“It is 20 for a reason please don't speed. Better to get there late than not at all.”
