A group of schoolchildren in Burnley have started their summer holidays by painting a colourful mural.

They have added the artwork to South-West Burnley's Valley Street Community Centre.

The project, backed by Calico Homes is giving young people in the area the chance to develop and enhance their artistic skills whilst brightening up a part of the neighbourhood.

The large-scale mural on the outside wall of the building reflects the children’s hope for the future of their neighbourhood in terms of peace, hope, community and inclusivity.

The children have also been involved in creating beautiful, spray-painted butterflies on the inside of the community centre.

The project started with an invitation to local people and businesses to share ideas and continued with a workshop day for 11 to 16-year-olds on Saturday, July 20.

The children took part in activities and discussions and learned about street art and spray-painting techniques.

Adele Aitchison, head of creative enterprises at The Calico Group, said: “Our aim with this project is to try and close the equality gap for children who may not have had access to opportunities within the creative sector.

"It was amazing to see young people in the area explore their artistic potential.

"The kids really wanted this project to let people know that everyone in the community is welcome and for Valley Street to be a place for people to be creative."

The mural is initially in place for the summer.

There will be an exhibition and celebration of the artwork on August 6 from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
