Bacup Pride are searching for volunteers for one final push as it bids for Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom award with judging due to begin next Thursday, August 1.

Having already had a plethora of success in the RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ competition over the last six years, the town now has its eyes set on the most prestigious award.

A team of dedicated volunteers have already planted more than 17,000 flowers in their efforts to try and win the award at the first time of asking.

The council has also opted to enter Stubbylee Park in Bacup into the award after the Rose Garden collected an outstanding in last year's It’s Your Neighbourhood contest.

The town centre is already decorated with numerous planters, beds and displays alongside the Cenotaph, but Bacup Pride is asking for additional volunteers to provide the finishing touches to areas of Stubbylee Park.

Pat Smith, chair of Bacup Pride said: “The award would mean an awful lot.

"I think people are very justly proud of the town centre and we know that they're proud of the planters and the things we do.

“Our volunteers put their heart and soul into it to making sure Bacup looks the best it can.”

The already strong team have been working overtime in the last few weeks and have received help from Friends of Stubbylee Park and people throughout the town who have wanted to lend a helping hand.

Pat added: “I think everyone in Bacup is proud of Stubbylee Park but if we could just get a decent award in Britain in Bloom that would be the icing on the cake.”

But for Pat winning isn’t everything, and the impact that the work has had on improving Bacup is more valuable.

She added: “I think if we don’t win Bacup is the winner anyway because of the impact the planting and siding does for Bacup.

“It would be nice to get a good award, but our reward is seeing what we see when we drive and walk through town and talking to local people and we know how they feel about it and really that is pretty special.”

The team will be meeting between 10am and 12pm on Saturday, July 27, and Monday, July 29, and are asking anyone who is interested in helping out to come along.
