Part of a motorway in Lancashire is closed at Preston due to a vehicle crash, causing severe delays.

Junction 32 and 33 on the M6 motorway was closed in both directions due to a crash earlier this afternoon

Police anticipate this will be closed for some time, and ask drivers to find an alternative route where possible.

An update from North West Highways at 4.45pm said "Trapped traffic is in the process of being released. No time given on when the carriageway will be fully reopened."

Further updates at around 6.30pm read: "The northbound carriageway is open. The southbound carriageway remains closed.

"There is no estimated time to when the carriageway will be reopened. Investigation work is currently taking place."

Earlier today a spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "The M6 J32-J33 is closed in both directions due to a road traffic collision.

"We anticipate this will be closed for some time.

"Please avoid the area and use an alternative route where possible.

"We’ll provide an update once cleared and thank you in advance for your patience."

Live traffic site AA reports that all lanes stopped have been stopped causing stationary traffic.

Traffic is building on the A6 Preston Lancaster Road (Lancaster South / Garstang) to J32 M55 (Broughton Interchange). 

Severe delays of 67 minutes and delays are increasing on M6 Southbound between Stony Lane (Lancaster Services) and J32 M55 (Broughton Interchange). Average speed five mph.

Severe delays of 13 minutes and delays are also increasing on M6 Northbound in Lancashire. Average speed ten mph.
