A Blackburn man who posted a death threat letter addressed to the Chief Constable of Lancashire Sacha Hatchett "clearly has issues", a court was told.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard the letter was received just days after Christopher Wrigley had appeared in court and admitted five charges of sending similar letters to his neighbours.

The court was told all the letters included the defendant’s name, address and mobile telephone number.

Wrigley, 75, of Ballantrae Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to sending a message that conveyed a threat of death, intending or being reckless as to whether an individual encountering the message would fear that the threat would be carried out.

He was remanded on bail until August 15 to tie in with the other matters.

The sentencing bench will have the benefit of a pre-sentence report.

Rachel Evans, prosecuting, said a police station worker opened the letter which was four pages long and related directly to the Chief Constable.

“Six days before the letter was received at the police station he had been released on court bail after admitting charges of sending threatening letters to his neighbours,” said Miss Evans.

Robin Phoenix, in mitigation, said his client did not try and hide from what he had done.

“All the letters were signed by him, with his home address and his mobile telephone number,” said Mr Phoenix.

“He has a very limited record and clearly has issues.”
