A man and his daughter were left with serious injuries and had to be cut from their vehicle after a dangerous driver ploughed into the side of them.

Taiyeeb Shah was driving on the wrong side of the road in Earl Street, Blackburn, attempting to overtake another car that had sped past his.

As he did so, the front of his Audi crashed into the side of a white Toyota Yaris driven by a Mr Masters, who had his daughter in the car with him.

CCTV played at Preston Crown Court showed the incident, and Shah could clearly be seen driving in excess of the 20mph speed limit before hitting the side of the other car.

Mr Masters tried to avoid the crash by mounting the kerb but could not get out of the way quickly enough.

Tara Riley, prosecuting, said Mr Masters suffered whiplash as well as cuts and bruises, while he had his daughter had to be cut from the vehicle by the fire service.

Shah, 29, had his wife and young daughter in his car at the time of the crash, which happened outside St James CE Primary School and was caught on the school's CCTV camera.

The incident happened at around 9.30pm on June 24, 2023.

James Heyworth, in mitigation, said it was “pure luck” nobody was killed, which was “something now not lost” on his client.

Mr Heyworth continued: “He saw red and decided to chase this other car.

"He was clearly on the wrong side of the road, clearly going at a high speed, and it’s clear the victim had to take whatever evasive action he could to avoid a head-on collision.”

Judge Ian Unsworth described how Shah fled the scene because he said the victims of the crash were shouting and swearing at him.

However, Judge Unsworth said: “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

He continued: “For reasons best known to you, you took no avoiding action and instead, at speed, collided with this vehicle, making forceful contact.

“You could have killed them or caused much more serious injury. You could have killed anyone who got in your way.

"You even put your wife and daughter in danger by your dangerous driving.

“You have again claimed very recently your victims got out of the car and started shouting and swearing at you. This is a fantasy.

“You lifted not a finger to help them. You deliberately chose to ignore the rules of the road.”

Shah, of Tenby Close, Blackburn, was jailed for 14 months and disqualified from driving for three years, plus an extension of seven months to reflect his time in custody.
