A blocked drain which had caused extensive flooding in a back alley has been a cleared, a council has said.

A resident had spoken out over the constant flooding in a back alley behind her home on Accrington Road, Blackburn.

Blackburn with Darwen Council said in an update this week that work had been done at the end of May and council teams had then revisited the site.

The drain had been blocked due to 'fat build up' and other debris causing the whole section to be flooded when it rained. Residents shared images of floating bins and other objects.

A council spokesperson said: “The back street gully was cleaned and jetted at the end of May and the gully is now in working order.

“Following significant rain during Tuesday and Wednesday morning (last week), the site was visited on Wednesday and it was observed that the gully is working and draining the water.

“There is some minor localised water following the rain on the street due to undulation of the road surface on the back street.

“There was a small amount of debris which was blinding the gully grate, and this has now been removed.”

Linda Daws who lives on the street said she had complained a number of times about the area getting flooded every time there was heavy rain.

She said she had been unable to take her bins out and the issue has been a ‘nightmare’ for local homeowners.

Used cooking oils and fats should not be disposed of down drains as they can congeal and solidify, causing blockages.

Cooking oil should be placed in sealed container and into the general waste bin for disposal, or large containers of oil can be disposed of at household waste recycling centres.

There are also private cooking oil collection firms that will pick up containers of used oils to be disposed of properly.
