Darwen’s first pride event is taking take place this weekend (July 13) and it is set to be headlined by a former Eurovision star.

After months of planning and fundraising, organisers Tina Walsh and DJ Skippy say they are excited that the event, on Market Square, will finally come to life.

Tina said it is open to all people, not just members of the LGBTQ+ community.

She said: “I am absolutely buzzing – I just hope the weather is nice.

"It’s been such hard work and I have had to do a lot of this on my own. It’s not just about pride, it’s a family event.”

Tina said she was inspired to host an event like this after working with young people in the LGBTQ+ community.

She said: “I have worked with people in the LGBTQ+ community. Their stories inspired me to make the event happen as there is so much stigma against them.”

Tina said the majority of people have been positive about it since the news was announced on social media.

She said: “We have had one nasty comment which has been reported but other than that everyone is so excited.”

Darwen Pride is set to be headlined by former Eurovision singer Nicki French, who sang Don't Play That Song Again at Eurovision in 2000. Nicki is also known for her dance cover version of Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Blackpool Boy George tribute artist, Liam Halewood, and Victoria Roberts from BBC talent show Altogether Now, will also take to the stage.

Hosts Patty Dale and DJ Skippy will be providing entertainment, with various other live music events planned throughout the day.

There will also be food stalls, activity stalls crazy golf and a teddy bears' picnic.

DJ Skippy said: “It feels good to be involved in the event and to be doing something that’s good for the community.

“It’s not just for the LGBTQ+ community, it’s a family event and there are plenty of activities for children too.

“There is an area, specifically for children, behind the stage so it is away from the sound.

“We have a lot of market stalls with activities. There will also be a crazy golf and teddy bear picnic event.”

DJ Skippy hopes the event will be “even bigger” next year.

He said: “We really hope it’s a big success and we will look to make the event even bigger next year.

“A lot of people are excited and say it is something different for the town. The LGBTQ+ community of Blackburn with Darwen have said this is fantastic.

“Obviously, the town already has Darwen Live and now we hope this will become a second regular annual event.”

Darwen Pride will take place on Market Square, from 12pm until 10pm.
