The family of a man who died in a crash last week have paid tribute to a ‘very loving’ grandad and great-grandad.

Derek Wick, 85, had lived in East Lancashire for 15 years first living in Fence and then moving to Colne, having been born in London and living in Birmingham for more than 30 years.

He was involved in a crash last week (Thursday, July 4) at around 11.10am at the junction of Hartley Street and New Market Street, Colne.

Police were called and found there had been a crash between a pedestrian and a Honda HR-V.

Paying tribute to Derek, his family said: “Derek was a much-loved husband of June, and they were married for 56 years.

“He was a father of two to Adam and Howard, a grandfather of four, and a great-grandfather of one. He was also a loving brother and friend.”

Derek, who worked as a chartered accountant throughout his life, was said to be passionate about helping others, regularly volunteering at Burnley Court and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

The statement continued: “Religion was important to Derek; he was a Christian who loved his church and had many friends there. Derek loved walking very much and walked in Alkincoats Park every day.

“Derek was very loving but a quiet man. Derek particularly really enjoyed being a grandad and a great grandad, and loved to spend as much time as possible with the grandchildren.

“Derek has left a huge hole in the lives of his family and friends. Everyone is devastated by the loss, and he will be very sadly missed by all who knew him.”

As part of the investigation into the crash, police are asking witnesses or anything with dashcam/CCTV footage to come forward.

Anyone who can help the investigation should email SCIU@lancashire.police.uk or call 101, quoting log 0415 of July 4, 2024.
