A man was arrested after being found almost five times over the legal limit for alcohol in his car.

Preston Police received a report suspecting a man was driving under the influence of alcohol at around 6.15pm on Tuesday, July 2.

They found the driver sleeping in a car on Roman Way in Ribbleton where he was given a roadside breathalyser test and blew a reading of 170 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath, when the legal limit is 35mcg.

The man, 47, from Chorley, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

When in custody, he gave a reading of 147mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, and he remained there.

A spokesperson for Preston Police said: "Our officers disturbed the beauty sleep of one man in a car, on Roman Way, Preston at around 6.15pm yesterday after receiving a report suspecting he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

"He was given a roadside breathalyser test and gave a reading of 170, almost five times the legal limit.

"A 49-year-old man from Chorley was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

"Once in custody, he gave a reading of 147. The legal limit is 35. The man remains in custody.

"We will not tolerate people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is dangerous, and can change so many lives in an instant.

"Driving impaired is a choice. You choose to get in your vehicle and endanger lives, including your own.

"So, think about that before you consider getting in your car under the influence of drink or drugs."
