United Utilities has provided an update after a burst pipe caused a road to 'partially collapse' in Burnley.

Last Thursday, on June 27, people were left without water due to a burst pipe on Brunshaw Road.

In videos, the pressure of the burst appears to cause the road to collapse and a ‘sink hole’ to form.

Five days later, Brunshaw Road, from Ridge Avenue to Brownhill Avenue, remains closed while repair works are carried out.

In an update, United Utilities said the road closure permit expires tomorrow, July 3. It expects work to be completed before this date “unless there are further issues”.

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Repairs are ongoing on [Brunshaw Road], Burnley under a road closure permit which expires on July 3.

“Unless there are further issues, it is expected that the work should be completed on or before this date. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

When the road first closed, one resident said there had been small leaks in the road "for about two weeks" and that little had been done to stop them.

They said they had been left without water and were told if it could not be restored soon a water bowser may be sent out.

Some drivers were seen ignoring the road closure, going over the damaged road surface and moving cones out of the way to continue driving up Brunshaw Road.
