A woman turned up at her ex-partner's address in the early hours of the morning and attacked his van.

Blackburn magistrates heard Ella Makinson was offered a caution by police on condition she paid for the damage but when she disputed the cost of the repairs the matter was sent back to court.

Makinson, 28, of St James Street, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to criminal damage to a windscreen and a wing mirror belonging to Stephen Tandy. She was ordered to pay £508 compensation after the court was told she had already paid £50. The magistrates declined to make a restraining order requested by the prosecution.

Nasima Patel, prosecuting, said Mr Tandy was in bed in the early hours when he heard voices outside.

He saw a man called Scott, who he had known since childhood, and his ex-partner, Makinson.

He saw her hitting the windscreen of his van with something but he couldn't see what it was.

"She hit it repeatedly until it smashed and the wing mirror was also damaged," said Miss Patel. "He heard the man called Scott shout at her to stop because it was done."

Laura Heywood, defending, said at a previous court hearing it had been agreed between the prosecution and the defence that the compensation should have been £500.

"She contacted the police to pay the £500 compensation but the officer said it should be more," said Miss Heywood. "The original complaint had been about the windscreen and the interview at the police station had been about the windscreen and she didn't accept damaging the wing mirror.

"Because there was a dispute the custody sergeant said it had to go back to court."
